Three ways to play

How to play O An Quan

  1. The board has 10 citizen squares (5 per side) and 2 mandarin squares at the ends.
  2. On your turn, pick one of your squares and a direction, then sow the stones one by one.
  3. If the next square has stones, pick them up and keep sowing. An empty square followed by a full one captures that square, and captures can chain.
  4. If your side is empty, you must put captured stones back to sow.
  5. The game ends when both mandarins are captured. Most points wins (a mandarin is worth more than a stone).
  6. 3 or 4 players: the board is a ring, each player has a row of 5 squares with a mandarin square between rows. Turns go round the ring with the same sowing and capture rules; when every mandarin square is empty, most points wins.
